German vs American TV

Oh no! “Pretty Little Liars” isn’t on TV in Germany! How will Lara see what happens? Who killed Alison? who is the real ‘A”? Oh my!!!! She’s hooked on the show so when she leaves in a couple months we might have to skype with her to tell her what happens! Or, we can Skype when we watch the show and just turn the camera to the TV! Or… we can get her the DVD series…. if it comes out on DVD! Our first thought might be what you’re thinking…. she can watch it online! Nope! when she tries to see American TV in Germany, a message comes up that says, ‘Not available in this country.”

Yep… American TV is a lot different than TV in Germany! And after being here for 8 months, Lara follows a few TV shows like ‘Pretty Little Liars”, ‘The Voice”, “The River”, “Good Eats” on the Food Channel and “American Idol” (but they have their own version of American Idol in Germany

The biggest difference in German TV… we have a lot more commercials. Ha! Not real surprising, is it? The “commercialism” of America shows it’s true colors! Another difference… they have 30 channels on basic TV. We have about 8 here in Arizona. That’s probably why everyone has Cable or Satellite TV in America! and one more interesting thing…. in Germany, they have a movie that comes on every night at 8:15p on different channels.

Another difference in television… there ARE American shows that air in Germany but voices are dubbbed in with the characters speaking German. A couple shows where Lara really noticed the difference was “Wizards of Waverly Place” on the Disney Channel. Of course they have the Disney Channel in Germany! After all, isn’t Disney EVERYWHERE??? But when she heard Selena Gomez talking in German in a different voice, Lara thought it was strange. Oh…yeah… the same goes for SpongeBob Squarepants! Ha! Lara can even sing the theme song in German! Funny… it’s not as annoying when I hear it in German as in English! Spongebob Schwammkopf, Spongebob Schwammkopf, Spongebaaaaaaahhhhhhhhb…. Schwammkooooooooooooooopf!
